About the Album
With this seventh album begins a new era for Metronomy, while composer, singer, and guitarist Joseph Mount had retreated in pandemic lockdown somewhere in the countryside of England since 2020 and the last Metronomy Album „Forever“. The title of this new record of the English combo is like a reflection of the pandemic that has turned our world into a „Small World“.
Small is also the track listing, which is reduced to 9 tracks, unlike the 17 songs of the previous album, that was mixed out of which mixed pop-rock, funk and house.
On the new album, Metronomy goes back to the basics, such as unpretentious little musical flashes of simple, chirpy pop. The exception here, however, are the two songs that hold the album together, LIFE AND DEATH, which comes across as slightly spliced, and I HAVE SEEN ENOUGH, which could also fit well with Lou Reed.
Meanwhile, the Englishmen praise the joy of spring through an orchestration that is as simple as it is inspiring to jump and dance, such as the single IT’S GOOD TO BE BACK , which already seems destined to become a festival hit, or LOVE FACTORY and RIGHT ON TIME, which should be turned up very loud loud on this years summer beach. Some tracks also stick in our musical memory center, for example the pretty I LOST MY MIND with its whistling solo in the middle or HOLD ME TONIGHT (feat. Porridge Radio).
At the Bottom Line
Small World is all in all a classic Metronomy with back-to-the-roots attitude and is extremely pleasing. The album is available on Qubuz and Apple Music in 24 bit / 44.1 kHz, on Apple Music also in Dolby Atmos.
The sound is absolutely first-class over the entire frequency range.
