Review:

Gretel Hänlyn is closing 2022 with her new single „Today (can’t help but cry),“ which premiered on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6 Music Show shortly before its release. „Today“ follows Gretel’s biggest track to date, „Drive,“ which landed on the Radio 1 B-list this week after being named Track of the Week by Clara Amfo. The new single is available on all major streaming and download platforms. Go ahead and get it!

Gretel Haenlyn

Writing „Today“ was very liberating for Gretel and the song describes the emotional sorrow of unrequited love with a heart full of bitterness.

Gretel explains how the song came about:

“Sometimes things don’t work out with someone, I had all this loving emotion and nowhere to put it. I was in a studio so close to where the protagonist in this story lives so he was naturally on my mind when I started writing the riff and chords. I ended up writing about what it would be like if the things could just unfurl for once, it was like I was living a totally fantasised relationship vicariously through the song.

This is probably my favourite song I’ve ever written because it got me out of a position where I felt I was drowning. It’s not easy to word things in a way that’s authentic to your emotions, and somehow also indulgent to your desires, but I did that with this and it really helped me make peace with my reality (rejection). Now when I play it I hear the pain that can come with the beauty of such a positive, pining emotion and the power of a young wandering mind.”

Bottom Line

With „Today,“ Gretel Hänlyn has launched an immensely emotional track with a strong positive statement. All of us know the feelings that rejection can trigger, or perhaps have had to experience it ourselves recently with a bleeding heart. The listener and fan will therefore immediately feel addressed by the upbeat harmonies and the slightly U2-like guitar lines and take Gretel and the track with its warming „Don’t Look Back in Anger“ message into their hearts.

But Gretel’s descriptive words to the track quite aptly show, that while we all long for a redemptive departure in these situations. But she also knows that the pain will be with us for a time and can always strike again at one moment or another. The forward-pressing beat of „Today“ also shows that our longing for departure and redemption is always a bit of an escape.

„Today“ enchants with top-notch songwriting, gripping arrangements and as always with Gretel’s immensely expressive voice, which can thrill us with goosebump effects in all the low vocal ranges as well as at the very top of the vocal spectrum. With 24 bit / 44.1 in hi-res format, the sound quality is excellent and incredibly well mixed over the entire frequency range.
