Review

For me, „Hooray! Hooray! Not Like This“ is, one of the 10 best German alternative/indie tracks written in the last 15 years.  The lyrics are lyrical masterpieces, as fierce and moving as I had not heard them until the album came out in 2010, and not again after that. The lyrics do physically hurt, if you play them to that person, in that one situation in your life, then you reap eternal hatred.

But once again it is only completely misunderstood, because the text is not directed against the other(s), rather the narrator directs the text knife against himself, against his own inability, against his own inadequacy. The last conciliatory words at the end of the text are days, weeks, months too late, as they always are.

And so the song is actually the final sequence, the white line, the red line and one’s own retreat.

Dear Gisbert have I ever thanked you for this track? No. I do now. Thank you deeply, Gisbert.

The whole album with a total of 12 tracks has the same incredibly high level as the described single. With lyrics that could not dive deeper into the human soul. And text passages that could not be more apt: „Fuck you in the knee, melancholy, you will never get me broken,“ it says after a good two-thirds of the album. „Which good thing have you ever brought to mankind“?

Gisbert zu Knyphausen was born in Wiesbaden and lives in Hamburg (both in Germany), is part of the Hamburg scene. And albums of this format can really only be born in this great city, Nationalgalerie around Nils Frevert had similarly great stuff on the shelf in the early nineties.

Certainly the album is melancholic, but can also abruptly go off up front. Stupidly, with music like this, we Germans are then quick to open the drawer labeled „Liedermacher“. I hate that, because Gisbert makes beautiful Alternative/Indi sounds in at least European cut, with a first-class band, and also tracks that can break straight forward to the seashore. It is modern music, but without wobbling after pseudo-modern trends. Hamburg just.
