Review

On September 21, 2022, the electronic duo DARKCAR from New Yok City (USA) self-released their debut single „Metal Beds“, which is available on all known streaming and download platforms. At qobuz you can purchase the single in the very best hi-res quality with 24 bits/48kHz for a good price. „Metal Beds“ is a trippy, almost psychedelic reflection on the transience of life formulated from a hospital bed.

The duo DARKCAR are Ashley Selett (vocals, lyrics, arrangements) and David Terranova (artwork, photos, videos, producer). Ashley writes all the lyrics and melodies while David does most of the production – the collaboration between the two is extremely promising and very synergetic.

DARKCAR

DARKCAR scores with its avant-garde experimental soundscapes all along the line and definitely breaks new ground in contemporary electronica. The sound seems as if it was recorded in super slow motion, is extremely cinematic.

You close your eyes and it’s almost as if the single is a mini soundtrack for the flight of the Voyager spaceship, which is making its way through the sparkling debri rings of a distant planet at an extremely slow speed. But the audio signals have a long way to us behind them and were obviously alienated by numerous space and time anomalies and thus seem somewhat offset, counter-rotating. As if the signal transmitter was located far away in a parallel universe similar to ours, but with abruptly time-shifted and strange physical laws.

But the production of David Terranova with Ashley’s hauntingly atmospheric vocals with dark, almost melancholically sad grace easily manages to pull the melodic thread through the sound ether. The melodic arrangements are unique, alienated, daring, and yet they speak to our subconscious in an enchanting and flattering way.

Even more impressive is the video for „Metal Beds,“ which has been exceedingly skillfully directed by David Terranova. Graceful beauty mutates into new unfamiliar, often unreal threatening visual structures from the deepest corners of our subconscious, which collapse and constantly reform. The „Metal Beds“ video is without question a small audiovisual masterpiece that you can’t watch often enough.

The Bottom Line

„Metal Beds“ is a small electronic musical gem, sometimes flatteringly affectionate, sometimes disturbingly alien-like and oppressive – and yet always gently melodically caressing, with touches that can be infinitely beautiful in one second, but which can also make you freeze ice-cold in seconds.
